How Long Should Your Cropped Jeans Be?

Here’s the key: Cropped jeans should hit right above your ankle bone and I’m going to teach you how to crop your own jeans.

Now that you know this rule, you probably have some jeans in your closet that are officially too long to be considered cropped, but too short to be full length. I promise, this takes less than 5 minutes and requires zero special skills. Once you do it one time, you’ll wonder why you ever overthought it. All you need is a good pair of scissors and an iron (admittedly, I use my flat iron for this sometimes). 

Here’s my quick and easy process of cutting jeans from home.

1. Try your jeans on and decide where you want them to hit. Again, cropped = right above the ankle bone. (Pro tip: I would suggest starting small if you are feeling nervous about it. Remember, you can always cut off more, but can’t bring back the length.)
2. Fold the hem up to that exact length. Take off your jeans.
3. Next, iron the fold to create a clean, straight crease – this is your cutting guide and will help you if you struggle with cutting a straight line, like I do.
4. Cut straight across the crease only on one leg! This is important.
5. Try them on before cutting the second leg to make sure the length is exactly what you want. Adjust if needed.
6. Once you’re happy, fold the jeans in half.
7. Use the already cut leg as your guide and cut the second leg to match.
8. There are lots of ways to create the perfect fray, like running your scissors along the cut edge or throwing them in the dryer for a few minutes to get them to fray up. 

And viola – just like that you’ve customized them to your body! 

Once you lock in that length, cropped jeans will instantly feel doable instead of confusing.
